| March–May | Include a storm shelter in the trip plan and follow NWS watches and warnings. |
| June–August | Watch for heat and reduce strenuous riding during the hottest hours. Carry water on each outing. |
| September–November | Plan around the forecast rather than assuming an autumn weekend will be mild. Pack for the overnight low. |
Make a weather stop part of the group plan
Use the park point forecast for the dates you are traveling. If thunder is audible, move to a substantial building or an enclosed metal-topped vehicle; an open-sided buggy or a tent is not equivalent shelter.

A night ride needs a separate check
The park’s 24-hour dune access makes night riding possible, but vehicle-powered front and rear lights are required. Check the forecast through the return time, charge equipment and agree on the camp meeting location before leaving.
