What the paperwork costs

Colorado lists both its resident OHV registration and the nonresident / plated-vehicle OHV permit at $26.25. Each runs from April 1 through March 31, rather than for a year from your purchase date. Choose the credential that applies to your vehicle and residency.

The winter closure comes first

BLM closes North Sand Hills to motorized and mechanized vehicles, including snowmobiles, from December 15 through April 15. Dates can change with local conditions; confirm the current notice before traveling near either end of the season.

Bring Colorado authorization

CPW requires a valid Colorado OHV registration or permit. Nonresidents need an OHV permit; plated street-legal vehicles also need a permit for recreational use on designated OHV trails and open areas. Check the current requirements for your particular vehicle.

Respect the sand, creek and trail boundaries

The BLM handout identifies protected creek-side areas and asks riders to keep wheels on open sand and designated trails. Its map is useful context, but current signs and closure notices control.

Prepare the group

Agree on a lead rider, regroup signal and return time. Check protective gear and the machine before leaving camp. For an emergency, call 911 and be ready to describe your location.

Check equipment before unloading

BLM’s visitor handout calls for a working muffler and approved spark arrester on OHVs, plus working headlights and taillights for night operation. Inspect equipment before the trip and confirm current requirements with BLM.

Make yourself easier to spot

BLM recommends whip flags here, although its destination page does not require them. A flag helps other riders notice a vehicle; it does not make a blind crest clear. Stop in a safe place to discuss the next section with the group.

Set a plan for a separated rider

• Agree a regroup location and a return time before leaving camp.
• Carry the route reference, water and an extra layer with you.
• If a rider does not return, use the group’s agreed check-in plan and seek help when needed.
• For an emergency, call 911 with your location, access road and vehicle descriptions.
