NORTH SAND HILLS SAFETY

North Sand Hills safety

North Sand Hills safety: the December 15 to April 15 closure, protected creek boundaries, overnight weather, separated riders and emergency calls.

Closure dates, creek boundaries and the overnight forecast

Sand and mountain-country approaches share the same trip. Keep the vehicle closure dates, creek boundaries and overnight forecast in the plan. An easy afternoon ride should still have a return time.

A separated rider needs a simple plan

Save camp while you are standing at the campground or your dispersed site. Agree a regroup place, an expected return and who acts if someone is late. Stop in a safe position before looking at a phone. A compass points toward camp; it does not show a legal route past the protected creek areas.

Weather can end the outing

Read the overnight period as well as the afternoon before choosing how far to ride. If thunder is audible, seek a substantial building or an enclosed metal-topped vehicle; open sand offers no shelter.
