| Trip window | What to plan around |
|---|---|
| January–March | Motorized winter closure. Choose another trip rather than planning a dune ride. |
| April | Closure runs through April 15; use the current BLM notice before planning a later-April arrival. |
| May–August | Use the point forecast for overnight camp temperatures, wind and storms. Holiday summer weekends are popular. |
| September–November | Plan layers and the return journey around the forecast. Published seasonal access is not a road-condition report. |
| December | The annual vehicle closure begins December 15. Plan the dates on both sides of your stay. |
Camp for the low temperature
A sunny afternoon does not tell you what the night in North Park will feel like. Pack sleeping gear and clothing around the forecast low, with dry layers available after riding. Read the forecast again before leaving Walden.

Have a storm stop
If thunder is audible, go to a substantial building or enclosed metal-topped vehicle. A tent, picnic shelter or tree is not a safe substitute. Decide on the shelter before leaving camp.
