Keep the tow rig on firm ground

Choose your parking area before unloading the sand machines.

Parking-area RVs and dispersed dune camping

BLM allows RV camping in the north, middle and south parking areas and dispersed camping in the dunes. That does not make soft sand suitable for the tow vehicle. Keep ordinary road vehicles on established roads and parking surfaces; plan dune access with equipment suited to sand.

A simple camp needs supplies

BLM allows RV camping in the north, middle and south parking areas. There is no potable water. Cottonwood has shelters, tables, grills and a restroom. Pack out litter.

Know what the surface can support

The BLM business plan warns that ordinary vehicles should remain on established roads and parking surfaces. Soft sand beyond them is suited to sand-capable machines, not the tow rig.

Make the setup deliberate

Plan your water and fuel before leaving town. Record the parking area in your group message so late arrivals do not search the dunes for you. Keep recovery equipment accessible without blocking another vehicle.
