BLM attributes the mature cottonwoods to a shallow water table and sand that retains moisture. The dunes are quartz-rich, and prevailing southwest winds continue to reshape them.

A place with more than one texture

Look for the contrast between open dune faces and the tree-filled low areas. Those differences give the place its character. Keep camp decisions and riding lines respectful of the vegetation that makes this destination distinctive.

Why cottonwoods are here

The trees are a useful clue to the hidden water story. BLM describes a shallow water table combined with moisture retained by sand. That supports mature cottonwoods in an otherwise arid setting. It does not provide drinking water for camp: the developed visitor facilities have none.

The quartz grains are continually reworked by wind. BLM reports movement of about a foot a year while the dunes are active. That is a landscape-scale description, not a way to predict the shape of tomorrow’s crest. Watch the contrast between sheltered tree areas and the open faces when choosing a first familiarization ride.

Use the names that help the group

The Bowl, middle parking and Cottonwood are useful arrival references. Agree on one of them in the trip plan. Calling the whole place “the dunes” does not help someone arriving late find a particular trailer. Record your actual camp after parking; do not use an area-center pin as the return location.

Riders helping care for the place

BLM’s 2014 National Public Lands Day record describes volunteers collecting litter and repainting the pay station and kiosk. The photograph below belongs to that event. It shows an older community stewardship day, not today’s facility condition.
