THE SEASON CALENDAR

One network.
Different seasons.

Every dune destination on its own calendar. Permit seasons, winter closures and seasonal zones mean the answer to where you should ride changes every month of the year. The table below is the annual pattern; live temperatures load on top of it.

RIGHT NOW

What this month looks like.

Access status comes from each destination guide, which takes it from the land manager. Today’s high and low are live. Both can change, and the agency always has the final word.

Oceano DunesOpen year round

California Central Coast

One of only two destinations in the current Dune Guide USA network where OHVs can ride designated sections of the ocean beach. Snowy plover and California least tern nest inside the SVRA from March 1 through September 30, when fenced enclosures protect the nests and riding continues around them.

Oregon DunesOpen year round

Oregon Coast

Forty miles of coastal dunes between Florence and Coos Bay, and the wettest place in the network. Individual areas carry their own habitat and seasonal restrictions, so check current conditions before you commit to a staging area.

oregondunesguide.com →
Little SaharaOpen year round

Juab County, Utah

High desert, which means both ends of the year bite. Summer afternoons are punishing and winter nights are genuinely cold. Sand Mountain and the surrounding country stay open throughout.

Silver LakeORV season April 1 to October 31

Mears, Michigan

The only place east of the Mississippi where you can legally drive your own vehicle on open dunes, and the hardest closure in the network. From November 1 through March 31 the ORV area is shut, no exceptions.

St. AnthonyWinter range closure through spring

Fremont County, Idaho

Two separate reopening dates, which catches people out. The big dunes generally reopen April 1, while the broader surrounding winter range generally stays closed until May 1. April is a partial month, not an open one. Verify the current BLM order before travelling.

GlamisPermit season October 1 to April 15

Imperial Valley, California

The inverse of Silver Lake. Permits are required October 1 through April 15, and the season exists because of the heat: summer highs pass 110F and most people simply do not come out in it. April is split, since the permit season ends on the 15th.

Sand MountainOpen year round

Churchill County, Nevada

Fees are waived every Tuesday and Wednesday, year round. Summer is hot and quiet, and dry sand rides worse and traps more machines than sand with some moisture in it. Winter is a gamble between lovely and snowing sideways.

Moses LakeDunes open year round, two zones on opposite calendars

Grant County, Washington

The Yellow Zone is closed October 1 through June 30, and the Mud Flats are open only July 1 through October 1. The main dunes stay open all year, but how much ground you get depends entirely on the date.

Hot Well DunesOpen year round, but a cool-season destination

Graham County, Arizona

Southern Arizona summer heat with no drinking water on site and a long drive to a hospital is a serious combination, and monsoon storms flood the washes from weather you cannot see. BLM improvement work runs through January 2027.

Dumont DunesCool-season planning; check BLM access

California

Check the current forecast.

BLM describes extreme summer heat and cold winter nights. Limited months indicate heat planning, not a seasonal legal closure. Check the access road, river crossing and current restrictions.

North Sand HillsVehicle closure December 15 to April 15

Colorado

Check the current forecast.

BLM closes the area to motorized and mechanized vehicles from December 15 to April 15. April and December are partial months. Dates may change with wildlife and weather conditions; check the current order.

New Mexico

Check the current forecast.

Year-round access is not a promise of comfortable weather. Check the forecast and temporary restrictions, and bring drinking water; BLM lists no potable water on site.

Oklahoma

Check the current forecast.

Dune access hours differ from office hours. Confirm current park notices, riding fees and campsite reservations. This is Little Sahara in Oklahoma, separate from the Utah recreation area.

THE WHOLE YEAR

Every month,
every destination.

This is the reason the network exists. No single guide can tell you where to go in January, because no single dune system is open all year in a way that suits everybody. Together they cover all twelve months.

Two things the colours cannot show. “Limited” means different things in different places: at St. Anthony it is a legal closure boundary, at Glamis it is heat that will end your weekend early. And every date here is the normal pattern, not a promise. Orders change, so confirm with the agency before you tow.

THE SHORT VERSION

If you only
remember three things.

Winter belongs to Glamis

Permit season runs October 1 to April 15, and the desert is at its best exactly when the northern dunes are shut. Holiday weekends fill the washes.

Summer belongs to Silver Lake

ORV season is April 1 to October 31, and it is the only place east of the Mississippi where you can legally ride your own machine on open dunes.

The coast never closes

Oceano and the Oregon Dunes stay open all year. When everything inland is either frozen or on fire, the Pacific is the fallback.
