SELF-CONTAINED DESERT CAMPING

Build a better base camp

Bring what your camp needs. Take home what it leaves behind.

Simple facilities. Serious preparation.

Recreation.gov describes primitive camping with vault toilets, no trash collection and a need to bring water. Camping on the flats is limited to 14 consecutive days.

Plan the arrival before the convoy splits

Agree on your staging area, vehicle order and meeting instructions. Give late arrivals enough detail to recognize the camp without driving through other groups looking for it.

Fire is a separate decision

A camping plan is not permission to light a fire. Read the current district order and permit requirements before packing for one. The 2026 seasonal order includes a Dumont-specific exception; its conditions and any newer orders still matter.
