DUMONT SEASONS & WEATHER

Dumont seasons & weather

Plan Dumont around extreme summer heat, freezing winter nights and wind, with a season-by-season guide and official weather sources.

Summer heat changes the whole trip

BLM reports summer highs of 100 to 120°F at Dumont. That belongs in the decision to go, not just the packing list. Plan water, shade and a way out before unloading. A short ride can still leave a rider far from camp.

Our planning recommendation is to favor the cooler part of the year. Winter is not warm around the clock: BLM reports overnight temperatures below freezing and frequent strong winds. Pack the sleeping setup for the low, not the afternoon high.

Make the stop decision early

Reduce strenuous activity during the hottest hours. If someone becomes ill in the heat, stop riding and seek help; call 911 for an emergency. Keep the group together so a rider does not have to manage a problem alone.

Seasonal planning, not a current forecast
Trip windowWhat to plan around
October–NovemberCooler-season trip planning. Holiday pass coverage matters around Halloween and Thanksgiving.
December–FebruaryPack for freezing nights as well as daytime riding. Winter holiday weekends have their own pass coverage.
March–AprilUse the day and night forecast to plan ride length, water and camp layers.
May–SeptemberExtreme heat is the central planning issue. The pass year does not make summer conditions suitable for every group.

Wind and the return route

Read the wind forecast before heading into open sand. Save your actual camp location and look back at the landmarks on the first easy loop. A remembered track is less dependable after wind moves the surface.
